The Longest Recorded Sieges in Military History...

To conduct wars of conquest for the pursuit of resources and people to do our bidding. Humans have always had to protect themselves from other Humans and as warfare evolved to a science over the millennia of recorded history, so too has our methods of protecting one selves.
Recognising the vulnerability that comes from living in small tribes on exposed lands, history is full of examples of small groups banding together for protection and then building larger settlements with better protection making them even more difficult for an invading force to conquer. Some of history’s greatest cities thrived thanks to how well they were defended by high walls, natural obstacles or well-placed defensive positions. Any protected city or fortress can be attacked but direct assaults can often be extremely costly to the attacker, but the one weakness of such fortified locations is that they cannot survive entirely without outside help. Therefore, invaders throughout history have adopted the tactic of the siege; cutting off the fortified city from any outside supplies leaving them to slowly exhaust themselves of food, water, medicine and reinforcements. It is an effective tactic but is often a time consuming one especially when the besieged city has made adequate preparations for such an eventuality. In this episode, we are going to examine the events surrounding two of the longest recorded sieges in history.
