Rossiter's early career was rooted in theater, where he honed his craft with regional repertory companies before making his mark on London's West End. His stage work earned him critical acclaim, particularly for his performances in plays by Harold Pinter and Anton Chekhov, where his ability to navigate complex, often darkly comic roles came to the fore.

Despite his significant stage career, Rossiter is perhaps best remembered for his television work, especially his portrayal of Rigsby in the ITV sitcom "Rising Damp" (1974–1978). As the miserly, lecherous landlord of a rundown boarding house, Rossiter created an iconic character who became a staple of British television comedy. His performance was a masterclass in physical comedy, characterized by his expressive face and impeccable timing. The role won him widespread acclaim and solidified his status as one of Britain’s finest comic actors.

In addition to "Rising Damp," Rossiter starred as Reginald Perrin in "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin" (1976–1979), another highly successful series that showcased his talent for blending humor with pathos. The show, centered on a man experiencing a midlife crisis, allowed Rossiter to explore themes of existential despair while maintaining a comedic edge.

Rossiter also had a notable film career, with roles in Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) and "Barry Lyndon" (1975), where he brought his distinctive style to the big screen.

Tragically, Leonard Rossiter's life was cut short when he died of a heart attack on October 5, 1984, at the age of 57. His legacy, however, endures, with his performances continuing to be celebrated as benchmarks of British comedic acting.
